long distance phone service

In the field of telecommunications, a telephone exchange or telephone switch is a system of electronic components that connects telephone calls. A central office is the physical building used to house inside plant equipment including telephone switches, which make telephone calls "work" in the sense of making connections and relaying the speech information.

The term exchange can also be used to refer to an area served by a particular switch (typically known as a wire center in the US telecommunications industry). It is sometimes confused with other concepts of telephone geography, such as NPA or area code. More narrowly, in some areas it can refer to the first three digits of the local number. In the three-digit sense of the word, other obsolete Bell System terms include office code and NXX . In the United States, the word exchange can also have the legal meaning of a local access and transport area under the Modification of Final Judgment (MFJ).

aztecwarrior777 asks: "I have Mozilla Firefox, but my long distance phone bill is really expensive. I wanted to know if i can have Mozilla Firefox without having long distance phone service."
dee replies: 'Yes I think you can'
tinkers16 replies: 'yeah'

babyblue replies: 'yuh, i have MTS high speed...no long distance.'
Janet G replies: 'Yes you can.'
address man replies: 'Sure. Tell them you want to cancel the long distance service.'
momof2 replies: 'first off, mozilla firefox is just a downloaded web alternative to internet explorer, aol explorer etc. you don't even need phone service to have internet unless your using a dial up service. If you have atnt or time warner cable, you can just have internet...i dont know about aol but im almost positive you just have to have a phone line..no long distance.'
2 replies: 'yes. skype. netphone. msn, yahoo msn also can. another one cannot tell u. business secret. heehee'
Macy replies: 'yeah if your internet is with a cable company and not a phone co.they try to squeeze out as much money as they can'
Kim Z. replies: 'Yes. Mozilla Firefox is a browser used to access the Internet. You still need some type of account with an ISP to get online. Click the link below to find and review free or cheap Internet access.'
Mike replies: 'Get DSL or a cablemodem, if that is not avalable you can get a wireless internet from a provider such as sprint.'
MissS-Gwens mommy! replies: 'yes its called cable internetwe use mozilla nd we have our internet throuhg the cable company. call them and ask for rates'
Macz replies: 'If you're using a dial up connection, then you might want to find a local number to connect. Either way, though, your browser shouldn't be affecting your long distance bill. You should be able to use whatever browser you want without it affecting your bill. The only way your browsing is going to make your bill go up is if the number you dial to connect with is a long distance call.'
Lindsay G replies: 'Firefox is a browser, which really have nothing to do with phone service. As long as you have an internet connection you can use firefox or whatever other browser you want to use.'
kecalhoun replies: 'Depending on if you have dial-up, you might be using a long-distance number to connect. If you are using a broadban or dsl connection it shouldn't be doing that.'
Bobbie O asks: "I understand US mobile phones don't work in Canada. I'll be calling home (US) a lot, with a little local calling. My plan now is to buy a phone there, get a pre-paid long distance calling card and some pre-paid local minutes. It's pricey. If anybody knows of an alternative, I'd sure appreciate knowing. Thanks."
An0nym0us mAn1Ac replies: 'Why wouldn't your phone work in Canada?'
SpecialTeacher replies: 'Our phones worked fine in Canada. In any case you can buy prepaid phones from stores like Wal-mart. Phone and minutes will run you under $100. Trac phone is one seller. I'd first find out if the phone use thing is a myth.'
M. N. replies: 'I'd say get a calling card. Although US mobiles should work in canada you'll just be charged more for calls, but it can get pricey.'
Robert H replies: 'Checkout this website to help answer your question.'
J.W. Augustiner replies: 'Check into Vonage, which works over any open Internet connection. You can get a smaller box that is very portable. When setting it up, you can pick whatever area code you want. Just be sure to give them your home address and not the canadian address (if it matters).Be careful you don't call 911 from the phone by accident either or they'll dispatch to your home even it your 100's or 1000's miles away.'
redsox3770 asks: "I am looking for the cheapest unlimited local and long distance phone service in salt lake. I do not have a computer, so they would be out of the question. Any Suggestions?"
love replies: 'good luck'
SexyTrojan replies: 'MCI's Neighborhood program is awesome. You pay one rate for everything: all calls (minus international), voice mail, call forwarding, call waiting, anonymous call rejection, etc.You get emails when you have new voice mails and you have the option of checking them online (like from work).$50 a month, plus taxes. They have to compete with the cel industry. The few times I had to call customer service, they were great, unlike SBC. The call centers are in America, not outsourced, the hold times were short and the employees were always helpful.I was very happy when I had them a few years ago. I had to change due to moving. I'm going back to them this month.'
ngufra replies: 'you do not need a computer to use VoIP.You need broadband internet service, then get a phone box from vonage or lingo and plug it to the cable or dsl modem and you should be able to phone straight away.Any other option would be quite expensive. with lingo, it's 20 per months for unlimited calls to usa, canada and western europe.add maybe 15 for dsl and your bottom line is 35 dollars.'
chabela0731 replies: 'Try my site to check out the services being offered in your area. They offer very cheap all distance plans.'
Kel asks: "I wanted to install the cheapested local phone service, but that one does not allow me to call out of state. Would this be a problem for ADT? I live in NY, but I know they have monitoring centers all over the country."
nmpcsolutions replies: 'I don't think so, the number that the monitor calls out to is an 800 number. But you would really have to check with ADT and your local phone provider to be sure if you require long distance service for dialing 800, all phone co's are different.'
Petwanel replies: 'I don't think so. ADT always have monitoring services in your general local vicinity. It might not be a zone 1 call but it should be no further than a zone 3. for these calls you do not need a long distance carrier.'
Your Hero replies: 'All of ADT monitoring receivers are to an 800 #, No problem'
www.keepsafesystems.ca replies: 'As the previous poster stated, they typically use Toll free lines. You might want to check out a local company as well'
mikeshka replies: 'You do not need long distance service, just basic landline phone service. The receiver number the panel dials to the monitoring station is a toll free number. You can also purchase a cellular communicator and pay an increased monitoring rate, but this will eliminate the need for basic phone service. It's usually an additional $8-12/month'
Joe G asks: "we are looking for an inexpensive international phone service company"
TradeConsult replies: 'Here is a resource for you:'
