A
cordless telephone
or
portable telephone
is a telephone with a wireless handset that communicates via radio waves with a base station connected to a fixed telephone line, usually within a limited range of its base station (which has the handset cradle). The base station is on the subscriber premises, and attaches to the telephone network the same way a corded telephone does.
The base station on subscriber premises is what differentiates a cordless telephone from a mobile telephone. Current cordless telephone standards, such as PHS and DECT, have blurred the once clear-cut line between cordless and mobile telephones by implementing cell handover, various advanced features, such as data-transfer and even, on a limited scale, international roaming. In these models, base stations are maintained by a commercial mobile network operator and users subscribe to the service.
Unlike a corded telephone, a cordless telephone needs mains electricity to power the base station. The cordless handset is powered by a rechargeable battery, which is charged when the handset sits in its cradle.
The Skype USB Phone Adapter combines all the great features of your existing telephone, with the low-cost advantages of the Skype Internet Telephone Service. Using your existing telephone enables you to use your telephone's built-in features such as speed dial, redial, mute and caller ID2. Using a cordless phone even unties you from your computer.
Wireless gadgets like cordless phones and baby monitors emit "minuscule" levels of radiation, according to an Australian study that rules the technology safe.
The Philips VoIP 321 is far from the average DECT phone as it combines the benefits of the manufacturer’s cordless technology and the Skype VoIP service. This stylish model allows you to make and receive phone calls over Public Switched and internet networks all from your handset.
The key to spending less and saving more begins right in your own home. Follow these easy tips and watch your savings multiply.1.Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use. Some items still burn electricity even when turned off. These can include chargers for cordless items including cell phone chargers and computer printers.

"okay my mom says that in a house when u have two cordless phones then if will interfer with the other phone? like there is one line with a number and another line with another number it will interfer with the two phones since they are both cordless. is this true cuz i want to have a cordless phone in my room so i can leave if someone needs something"
joe r replies:
'not true.. you can have diffrent cordless phones next to eachother, modern technology prevents one base from interfearing with the other... only exception would be if they were cheaper 900mhz phones or earlier....'

"I have normal phone line and a VOIP line. I am trying to use two different 5.8 GHZ cordless phones. But since I started doing this I am not receiving calls on my normal line. I called the phone company and they say that it must be in my wiring and they will send somebody out. But I do not think that it is my wiring. Please help!!!!How would you check the channels that they are on?"
Carl_the_Truth replies:
'Yes you can. Just make sure they are on a different channel.'
Nate J replies:
'I have two identical cordless sets.each set is connected to different lines.Setting the handsets in their correct base sets the handset to work from that base respectively. Also, one is on the Qwest land line and the other on Magic Jack.I do have a problem if I try to dial the MJ line if I am within a few feet of the Qwest line base.I have base units in different rooms. I do believe that if they were (the base units) in the same room That I would have problems. Both of my units have caller ID screens. When I press the channel button it shows the channel # on the screen.'
zxxxt replies:
'No need to worry about channels. Most cordless phone nowadays has thousands of combinations so you'll get different connections everytime and the chance of getting the same connection is very very remote.'

asks:
"My wife and I are looking at getting a new cordless phone. We want a good one, but we're unfamiliar with the meaning behind mega/gigahertz. I know it's a measurement of power, but what does it get you by having more? Is it more range, clearer signal, both, or something else? Also, what are the advantages of digital cordless phones?"
tom4bucs replies:
'not power - its the frequency of the radio waves that communicate from the phone to the baseI think the higher band is better - ask the salesperson'
CctbOh replies:
'2.4 use to be the standard but now they make them 5.8 which gives you clearer signal plus less chance of people listening in on portable scanners.'
monetspicasso replies:
'it is the frequency range at which it transmits...some ranges are more busy than others therefore more prone to interference'
Critical Mass replies:
'Gigahertz (GHz) is higher than Megahertz (MHz), just like in computers. It refers to the frequency the phones operate on, just like a radio. The higher the frequency, the better the distance, it's better through walls, and it CAN be clearer, depending on whether or not a lot of your neighbors are on the same frequency. As far as digital is concerned, it is better if you're worried about security. It's virtually impossible for someone to eavesdrop on you, whether accidental or intentional.'
flywho replies:
''mega' means 100, 'giga' means 1,000 - hertz that is.The higher the frequency, the clearer the reception.Usually, the range increases somewhat. You should ask the sales person (if they know anything) or even open the carton and read the brochure. I have found that to be the best source of information.'
joe r replies:
'it is the radio frequency that the phone usesthe 1st cordless phones were around 40-50 mhz some baby monitors used the same frequencies, and are very easy to listen in on.900 mhz phones are almost as easy to listen to with almost any radio scanner.900 mhz with DSS (digital spread spectrum) is encrypted, although the radio scanner can pick up the frequency the phone is on, the signal is scrambled and can not be heard buy the scanner user. (to my knowledge there is no way to break this encryption publicly available)2.4 ghz phones operate on the same frequency band as wifi, and therefore may recive interfearance from wireless networks, although I have not come across a case of this, it is possible.5.4 ghz phones operate on the same frequency as the public service wifi network (used by police, etc) these networks are not very common, and you are least likely to recive interfearance, and less likely to be listened in on. to my knowledge 2.4 and 5.4 phones all have DSS.'
GIRLYinNY replies:
'Mega- (1,000,000 Hertz) or giga- (1,000,000,000 Hertz) hertz refers to the frequency at which the signal is transmitted. Generally speaking, the higher the frequency the weaker the signal, however, factors such as what walls the signal would need to travel through and what the wall is made from as well as where the base of your phone unit is located. If you use wireless Internet or similar technologies, there is a greater chance of interference with gigahertz phones. Gigahertz phones can be more useful in a large company or building as they are better suited for cordless phone systems with multi-handsets, which allow for features like call transferring and forwarding, but they are more expensive.Advantage: Digital lines are more secure than analog lines, which can be picked up by anyone with a scanner. Digital is also quieter because only the conversation is transmitted, not background noise.'
kerry k replies:
'Digital phones are now standard by the decree of the FCC. Part of the issue for digital is security, and part of it is the requirement of the systems that are in current use. Frequency is not a function of power. These telephones are operating at less than 1 watt of power anyway. Buy a 5.8 gigahertz phone, it should give you the service that you need. More range is going to be how much power the device is designed to produce. Range is also going to be determined by what is in the way of the signal. Metal objects tend to interfere with the phones signal. Because these phones use what is known as "frequency hopping", that is, they never use the same frequency each time, within the capability of the phones operation, there is less likelihood of someone hearing your conversation.'

asks:
"Detailed and source-cited information that supports your response is required in order to get best answer. I need to know WHY your answer is what it is. If there is no solution to the question among the scientific community then compare the cordless phones to cell phones."
tkquestion replies:
'You are very demanding... almost to a point it seems rude. I will just answer this for the interest of general public. I thought you wanted help. The answer is, no, there is no danger. Most cordless phones emit 5 mw or less. Cellular handsets transmits 600 mw or less. Handie talkie that police use transmits around 3 to 5 watts. They all transmit at around the same frequency.Human tissue damage occur by heating. Any of these sources does not have the enough energy to heat tissues enough to cause problems. There are no established and agreed upon danger from any of them.'
Yuki replies:
'No, short wave radio travels on the same frequency, and their have been adverse effects with that.'
Bob B replies:
'NO!! even RF heating is not an issue.'
ComputerBug replies:
'The danger comes from being monitored & not knowing it. Anything you broadcast through the air can be legally monitored, in other words also cell phones & wi-fi.'
