GSM ( Global System for Mobile communications : originally from Groupe Spécial Mobile ) is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. Its promoter, the GSM Association, estimates that 82% of the global mobile market uses the standard. GSM is used by over 3 billion people across more than 212 countries and territories. Its ubiquity makes international roaming very common between mobile phone operators, enabling subscribers to use their phones in many parts of the world. GSM differs from its predecessors in that both signaling and speech channels are digital, and thus is considered a second generation (2G) mobile phone system. This has also meant that data communication was easy to build into the system.

The ubiquity of the GSM standard has been an advantage to both consumers (who benefit from the ability to roam and switch carriers without switching phones) and also to network operators (who can choose equipment from any of the many vendors implementing GSM). GSM also pioneered a low-cost (to the network carrier) alternative to voice calls, the Short message service (SMS, also called "text messaging"), which is now supported on other mobile standards as well. Another advantage is that the standard includes one worldwide Emergency telephone number, 112. This makes it easier for international travellers to connect to emergency services without knowing the local emergency number.

Newer versions of the standard were backward-compatible with the original GSM phones. For example, Release '97 of the standard added packet data capabilities, by means of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). Release '99 introduced higher speed data transmission using Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE).

Communications giants Verizon and AT&T provided free portable cell phone towers for John McCain's Sedona ranch in 2007, the Washington Post reports. The companies also plan to build permanent wireless towers on land provided by the McCains, even though the installations would scarcely benefit anyone besides the McCain family.

Alexis asks: "My family and I are moving to Tennessee, in a small city only minutes away from Nashville. We are getting a different cell phone carrier because we all have different things. We are going to get a family plan for the 4 of us. Is there anyone who has a family plan that is happy with their service? And what is the cheapest plan to get 1000 whenever minutes for the whole family? I just want your suggestion on which cell phone carrier is the best before we go and pay a lot more than we need to for a phone. Thanks!"
Angel K replies: 'I think Verizon is the best cell carrier. I am on a family plan. Have 3 lines with 1000 minutes, plus free IN falling. Our bill is $130 per month. Plus I have a texting package. Do check the coverage in your area before jumping into a contract. If Verizon does have good/excellent coverage in your area, then go with Verizon. You can check the coverage by going to verizon's web site and going to the coverage map'

The base price is 69.99 for the 1000 minutes, plus 9.99 for the extra line and something for text messages on one of the lines.Free minutes when you call another T-Mobile Customer, free nights (I think start at 9 and end at 7) and free weeekends.Good Luck!'
Quarter Midget Mom replies: 'Cingular's got a decent deal. My phone is $50 & the rest are $9.99 each for 550 minutes shared. Calls w/ in network are free.....and we get to rollover unused minutes!!!'

udontno_101 replies: 'You probably will have to pay for the phone. IdkIt is ten dollars for each additional line after two lines. Unlimited verizon to verizon text is 10 dollars, btw.'
katefields1 replies: 'From what I remember, it's $9.99 to add another line and yes, you have to pay for the phone. Very often, though, there is a rebate or a sale going on and you can get the phone for very cheap or free. It might depend on what the store has in stock.'
