A SIM lock , simlock , network lock or subsidy lock — not to be confused with PIN or PUK code — is a capability built-in to GSM phones by mobile phone manufacturers. Network providers use this capability to restrict the use of these phones to specific countries and network providers. Currently, phones can be locked to accept only SIM cards from one or more of the following:

  • Countries (the phone will work in one country, but not another)
  • Network/Service providers (e.g. AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile, Vodafone, etc.)
  • SIM types (i.e. only specific SIM cards can be used with the phone).

In most countries, most mobile phones are shipped with country and/or network provider locks. In addition, these locked phones tend to have firmware installed on them which is specific to the network provider. For example, if you have a Vodafone or Telstra branded phone in Australia, it displays the relevant logo and may only support features provided by that network (e.g. Vodafone Live!). This firmware is installed by the service provider and is separate from the locking mechanism.

Most mobile phones can be unlocked to work with any GSM, such as O2 or Orange (in the UK), but the phone may still display the original branding and may not support features of your new carrier. Most phones can be unbranded by uploading a different firmware version, a procedure recommended for advanced users only.

bigtymberto replies: 'an unlocked cellphone means it has been opened for use with other service providers... ie: if you have a phone locked to cingular, you can not put a tmobile sim card in it... but if you have an unlocked phone, you can use both sim cards and even travel the world and use their local simcards...'
Shawn A replies: 'Chances are if you unlocked it your phone uses a sim card. Normaly, if you have T-mobile, you can't take your sim card out and put a Cingular sim card in, but if you unlock it you can put any sim card in it and it will work. The componys will do it for you, for about $40-60. I unlocked my phone in and then the screen sort of got cracked (tottaly unrelated) but i sent it in and they knew it was unlocked and they did not care.'

I have a Motorola Slvr with a T-Mobile sim and seems to work fine, just took it a week to find "T-Mobile Tower" but if you also have T-Mobile and it tells you that you can only use Cingular its fine, no extra charge T-mobile & Cingular share the same towers. :D'
blue_raven replies: 'As far as I know, unlocked cell phones are already considered openline, meaning it can work with any kind of sim, prepaid or postpaid/ but you still nead to consider the bandwidth of the cell phone, is it single band? dual? or triband? be wary, a lot of sims do not work for single band, some do not work for dual band... if it is on ebay, then you can ask seller question, if you are going to exchange trade through meet ups, better bring your sim and try it on the phone when you meet so you can be certain nothing is wrong with the phone.'

JON T replies: 'There are no real disadvantages as you can insert an sim card into the phone and away you go. The hardest thing is just finding a reasonably priced unlocked phone. It's worth pointing out though that even if the phone is locked most phones can now be easily unlocked with software that is redily available for download.'

All you would have to do is put your current SIM card in there and go.However, GSM technology is the U.S. is only T-Mobile and AT&T. Verizon and Sprint uses CDMA technology.
