A prepaid mobile phone ( pay-as-you-go or prepaid wireless ) is a mobile phone for which service is purchased in advance of use. By purchasing credit to use on a mobile phone network, a user can access a mobile phone network without ongoing billing. Users can then use the mobile phone network until they run out of credit. The alternative billing method (and what is commonly referred to as a mobile phone contract) is the post-paid mobile phone, where a user enters into a long-term billing arrangement with a mobile network operator or carriage service provider (CSP).

It is always better to to use a cell phone to pay as you go rather than the monthly contract plan.In other words this type pay as you go' may also be called as prepaid plan'

First of all, if you happen to travel overseas on a regular basis, you can go on with the buying of SIM cards; that too, prepaid, in the country that you’re in. It could be used immediately with an unlocked cell phone of yours.

The UK government plans to REQUIRE ALL CELL PHONE BUYERS TO PRESENT A PASSPORT -- even for pre-paid cell phones. All data, especially data linking cell phones to individual people, will go into a central anti-terror database.

Mihael Keehl asks: "Do prepaid cell phones have to be activated right away? One of my relatives is planning to buy one as a Christmas gift for someone, and they asked me but I have no idea."
Angela W replies: 'its best to activate them now and then and charge them up so that the person receiving the gift can use it when they receive it'
katluver005 replies: 'No, it doesn't matter when they get activated, to an extent. You don't have to pay for it until it's activated, but you shouldn't let it sit for any huge amount of time, as it could become outdated. Also, you probably don't want to activate it until it's been given, because you'll be paying for minutes they never got a chance to use.'
funkucla!!! replies: 'They can be activated right away or they cannot. When you buy a prepaid phone they come with a sim card that has already been scanned and activated. But they also come with a prepaid card worth $5. That card is not activated until you punch the card code into the phone to fill it with the $5 worth of minutes. I work for cingular, and with us you can get a prepaid plan that would be $1 per day for the first call no matter how long you talk, and the calls after that would be 10 cents per minute. Plus you can also send and receive texts for 5 cents per text. The second plan is a 25 cents per minute plan. the reason it is 25 cents per minute is because you dont get charged that dollar for the first phone call of the day instead you get charged 25 cents per minute. Both plans have rollover minutes month to month. Hope this helps. If you have anymore questions feel free to contact me. click on my avatar and my email should be there.'
robabard replies: 'No. They do not. Activate it Christmas Eve, and remember to give the battery a good long initial charge..'
INVENTOR asks: "Some prepaid cell phones only work in their coverage area but do not work in outside their coverage areas. I need a prepaid cell phone that works whever I go."
jundval replies: 'My Friend, there are! please check out t-mobile.com or stop into any of our retail outlits for more info! HAVE FUN ON THE GO!'
crazycarl0217 replies: 'if you go with a large phone provider they will. Verizons INpulse works everywhere. AT&Ts GoPhone also will work anywhere in the US. I believe T-mobile will as well, but not positive about that one.'
Jessica P replies: 'There are a large amount of prepaid cell phones out there that will work across the US.There are too many to mention in this answer, but as stated above, most major carriers will allow for this option.Check out for great info on all the major carriers and their offerings.Compare various cellphone carriers and their plans here:Hope this helps =)'
Harsh asks: "Liquor and cigarettes are not sold to anyone without a driver's license or state ID card? Isn't it ridiculous that anyone can buy a prepaid cell phone and use it to commit crimes. I just saw on AMW that a murder victim had called prepaid cell phone thrice on the day he was killed. Police couldn't find out the owner of the cell phone because it had a prepaid card. This is a threat to the national security as well if terrorists are able to buy such disposable phones."
Ultimate Dude replies: 'yeahnot a threat, they are just phones...its our right to buy and sell whatever products we want'
Bleak replies: 'yes-'
ponchomax replies: 'Things get regulated once a relatively small population ruins it for everyone . . . I am sure it will happen sooner or later.'
Freedom replies: 'Well, I think the government already has enough information on us so if someone wants to use a prepaid phone for anonymity, let them. It really isn't any different than using a payphone, is it?'
Killermhmm replies: 'NO. i don't want a terrorist having access to one... not that they don't.'
Amanda C replies: 'TEMPORARY PHONES FOR OUT OF COUNTRY USERS???'
coastal stone bird replies: 'i believe they're doing it on purpose to experiment with all the biometric technologythugs then also have a false sense of security'
JustChillin replies: 'No, people with pre paid cell don't kill people do.'
SnowMosq replies: 'That's ridiculous. Just because something can be used improperly does not mean responsible people shouldn't be allowed to use its advantages. I personally love prepaid cell phones because it allows me to not be tracked...and I'm a responsible citizen.'
Andrew replies: 'then we would have to regulate the sale of items that could be used to make an rf transmitter/receivers because they could be used to detonate a bomb.next, we should regulate the sale of gps trackers, because this could be used to detonate a bomb.we should regulate the sale of wifi cards, because this could be used to detonate a bombwe should regulate the private sale of cars, because they could be used in a bombing.ya see where that would get us?Just because one in 50,000 people do something wrong, doesnt mean the other 49,999 people should be harmed.'
gomanyes replies: 'Liquor and cigarettes require ID cards only because they are restricted by age. The store does not keep track of who buys it. I guess keeping track would help, but they could always use a payphone.'
Reese replies: 'it is not always like that. if everything we do is monitored, we no longer have privacy in there. you will not be different to a dog on a leash.'
wvcudlgrl asks: "I am taking a Carnival cruise on 10/13 departing from Norfolk Va and going to the Bahamas. We will be stopping in Freeport and Nassau. Is there a prepaid cell phone that will work. I use my regular phone for business so I don't want to take it and be bothered while I'm on vacation.Your help is appreciated."
!!! CORN POPS :) replies: 'Not that I known off, It depends if the cruise ship has good reception.'
Barkley Hound replies: 'It will work for sure on land. Some ships are now offering cell phone service on the ship but it is treated as an international call. You will have to check with your cell phone company about rates from the Bahamas and for international calls on the ship.₪ ɦəlʞɹɐq ₪'
jvega624 replies: 'cell phones do not work on cruise ships i believe'
Dan replies: 'If you don't want to be bothered, why take any phone with you? Enjoy yourself on the ship, and don't worry about what is going on elsewhere.Regards,Dan'
star*yellow replies: 'cell phones do work on most cruise ships but at an extra cost. you should check with your cell phone provider and the cruise ship to see what the rates are going to be for you to use your cell phone on the ship and when you get on land.i recently went on a cruise with Carnival and my cell phone worked on the ship and on land.'
Highly Favoured replies: 'I went on the Carnival destiny and my post-paid phone did not work. I only started to get calls after land was in sight. I did use another person's phone but do not know if it was post or pre-paid. You can still take one because nothing beats a trial but a failure.'
Tivogal replies: 'i would ask the company you are buying the pre paid cell phone from.some you could get coverage at the ports. You might want to make calls from shore with an International phone card. that would save you from large charges.good luck(cc)cruisecritic.com'
seventy replies: 'you have to get permission off the cell phone company too, to take your phone abroad. They don't work at all at sea because there is no signal. There should be an internet cafe though so you'd be able to keep in touch with people via email'
luludoodie replies: 'Cell phones only work if you are in range of a shore based transmitter. The cruise lines want you to use their (high margin) satellite phones those that offer a link to a cell phone are having to use a satellite link so you pay "their" rates not normal rates.'
TrueFalseT replies: 'Not if your in the middle of the ocean they don't you need to be close enough to land for them to get a signal.'
jimster replies: 'depends what line you take. I know that when you take norwegian, most of their ships have satelite and underwater comm lines. however they charge you an arm and a leg for international calls. the best thing to do is wait until you reach each port.'
erinaquarius asks: "What are some reliable prepaid cell phone companies? If not, what kind of phone would you recommend for a first-time cell phone buyer?"
baby_blue_eyes952002 replies: 'prepaid cellphones can actually be more expensive. If you have a cellone around you i would go there. You can get unlimited minutes for 50.00 dollars a month. If you get a prepaid than they can be a lot more a month.'
starz_n_smilez replies: 'pre-paid most likely will come out to being more than a plan cingular and sprint are good for plans but if you hav ur heart set on pre-paid then i would say get a razor fone, their cute and easy to use'
Royalty replies: 'I have had a go phone from Cingular and a XE Mobile.. They both are pretty easy to under stand.. Try going to these sites Good luck..'
