Early model 464G Western Electric Key Telephone Set

A key system or key telephone system is a multiline telephone system typically used in small office environments.

Key systems are noted for their expandability and having individual line selection buttons for each connected phone line, however some features of a private branch exchange such as dialable intercoms may also commonly be present.

Key systems can be built using three principal architectures:

  • Electromechanical shared-control
  • Electronic shared-control
  • Independent keysets

Craig L asks: "I want to link the phone systems of my two remote offices to the head office. They are all in different cities. So far through research I have discovered VOIP over a VPN how exactly does this get done? What software/hardware is needed? I am sure I could just call up a company to come do this for me, but it is not of great importance and I would like to keep the cost low. Do it my self."
michael s replies: 'contact Vonage they will be able to do this for you at a relatively low cost.'
bladecrimson replies: 'Normally a PBX system is installed in a large office like; Avaya or Nortel Meridian...etc These systems are facilitated by leased trunks from your Telco, depending on how many lines are needed, anywhere from a few T1's to an Optical Carrier transport system. With the right type of system you could implement PBX to IP migration to interconnect these local PBX systems into a interconnected PBX utilizing WAN connections. There are also fully integrated VoIP services via IPBX -Most of these systems have the same or similar features to their PBX counterparts. Many have enhanced features, such as integrating voice mail with e-mail, or the other enhanced features that computer telephony integration can provide. However let me warn you upfront, while consumer VoIP services like Vonage utilize existing broadband services like Cable and ADSL, these types of user access lines will not work with a IPBX. This technology is dependent on SONET and ATM optical carrier transport infrastructure, meaning you would need at least a OC3 connection (3 DS3's on optical carrier) to interface the WAN access gateway at each location requiring a IPBX system. Your talking about multiple phone calls, free lines, Email, System data, etc ...over basically one access system, thats alot of bandwidth! You may want to investigate A hosted PBX system delivers PBX functionality as a service, available over the Public Service Telephone Network (PSTN) and/or the internet. Hosted PBXs are typically provided by the telephone company, using equipment located in the premises of the telephone company's exchange. This means the customer organisation doesn't need to buy or install PBX equipment (generally the service is provided by a lease agreement) and the telephone company can (in some configurations) use the same switching equipment to service multiple PBX hosting accounts.'
Saucy B Foxilicious asks: "The technology will cover European airspace. Is this a good idea?Security risks? Nuisance to other passengers trying to rest? Please advise what you think about this!"
mossy replies: 'passengers dont get much rest as it is, with people talking, children, and stewards so i dont think it would make any difference. As long as they dont interfere with the planes technical equipment then why not'
nitebearer replies: 'Well you have that nuisance to other passengers right for some as they talk so loud everyone can hear and learn what's going on in that persons life. But for many it would be nice as you get to do something rather than read the wornout mags, watch the outdated movie and you can complain to someone outside the airline about the meal you just had.Yes it would be distracting as someone will miss the fasten seatbelt sign when hitting rough weather and they'll complain and possibly sue for any injury. But people want this and we are more a technology world and peopele expect to be able to use technology everywhere now.'
intel replies: 'Great when you spirallying to the ground you can call your loved ones and say good byeeeeeeeeeee'
Skidoo replies: 'I think it's a dreadful idea. I imagine the security aspect has been considered, but it would be dreadful to have to listen to half conversations on planes as well as trains, buses and everywhere else!!'
Shannon J replies: 'i think it is awful idea, i mean who knows what the phone could do, it probably could interfere with the airplane'
Jaylee254 asks: "I mean like the person calling you blocked their number but it still shows on the caller ID. Like if I called a business and didn't want my number to show on the caller ID, is there any chance they could get the number?"
Mike replies: 'No. If u block your number there is no way that person u are calling can find out your number. Although if u block your number and do prank calls then the person u are calling can call the police and put a trace on the phone and then that person will be able to find out your number. So if u are just blocking your number cuz u dont want people to know it and arent pranking people then no there is no way it can be found out.'
**Sarah** asks: "I need to forward calls that are coming in to the front desk to another phone in the building. Does anyone know if this is possible or how to do it? We have a phone tree and when the caller hits zero it does a double ring at the front desk. I need that double ring to go to my office phone??? Anyone?"
Max2 replies: 'It all depends on the type of Nortel phone system you have and the way it has been programmed. There are two main types, the PBX and the Electronic Key system.Typically there has been a forward key programmed on your phone and you just hit the forward button, the extention number that you want to forward to, and then the forward button again.'
John D asks: "Looking for the best cable to pull for a 10 phone system that has 5 individual phone numbers? Is Cat5 good enuf for that?"
joe r replies: 'CAT 3 is voice grade, alittle easier to pull then cat 5 but CAT 5 will work fine it is made for data and is slightly more expensive then CAT3if you do go the CAT3 route, i would recommend pulling 4 pair so there are spares...cat 5 is 4 pair wire...'
