A telephone card , calling card or phone card for short, is a small card, usually resembling a credit card, used to pay for telephone services. Such cards can either employ prepaid credit system or credit card style system of credit. The exact system for payment, and the way in which the card is used to place a telephone call, depend on the overall telecommunication system. Currently, the most common types of telephone cards involve pre-paid credit in which the card is purchased with a specific balance, from which the cost of calls made is deducted. Pre-paid phone cards are disposable. When the balance is exhausted you simply buy a new card. Cards purchased can often be refilled. The other main type of card involves a card with a special PIN printed on it that allows one to charge calls to a land-line telephone account.

There are principally two core technologies for phonecards: stored-value and remote memory.

queenfee05 asks: "I have family in Jamaica, UK, USA, Canada. As you can imagine I am tired as hell of buying phone cards. Anyone know of any really good international phone cards? A long time ago I new of one that sprint had for one flat rate per year.Help anyone?"
bonita replies: 'I personally like the AT&T refillable calling cards that they have at Walmart. I put $10 and it gives me 9 minutes to Cuba. With other calling cards I ususally get 7 or 8 minutes. Plus they are very reliable.another optina that you have is cable companies like Charter and Comcast offer unlimited calls to anywhere in the USA and some include Canada as well . So you would only have to worry about Jamaica and UK. Plus there is no contract with them so you can cancel at anytime.'
nattalie74 asks: "How do the minutes work on international phone cards? Was wondering if anyone knows much about the international phone cards. It says 143 minutes but I was only allowed to talk for 7 min? I dont understand that. This was my first time using it so kind of confused."
Stephen replies: 'You buy a phone card (eg. $5), and there is a specific rate for that specific phone card and a specific rate for every country/minute. For example, if you buy this $5 card and you're calling to Brazil and the rate is 1cent/minute, you can talk on that card for 500 minutes because there is $5.Some phone cards have extra start-up fees, etc. when you first use your phone card. Most of the time, if you don't use your phone cards in the period (eg. 6 months) after your first activiation of the card, it will expire and the card will be useless after that 6 months.'
sotires replies: 'The catch in these cards is the connection fee. You use up a whole section of your minutes each time you connect. So they are very good for long calls, but if you want to make shorter calls (or get through to an answering machine) they are not really economical. I prefer to use telediscount.com and webcalldirect.com. Much better value and easier to manage.'
BJC replies: 'Sounds like there were some pretty hefty fees on that card. There are all kinds of fees on phone cards not just the rate per minute. There are connection fees, maintenance fees, rounding charges, taxes. This page has a guide at the bottom explaining all these fees. It is a price comparison site that calculates the total cost of phone cards including all these fees. Here you can compare the worlds best phone cards by there true cost so you get the minutes you expect.'
Katie J asks: "I bought an ALO international phone card from a vending machine in the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. But the card doesn't work properly. I called their customer service, they only speak in English and they told me that the customer service and the phone card company are not the same company. I found the ALO cards website, wrote 2 emails, but they were "rejected by the recipient domain".So the questions I would like to ask are: do you know who is the person in charge for those cards? And how to have my money back?"
CRAFTEE asks: "I don't like buying stuff online. I searched for cheap international phone cards but I dunno how to find a store that actually sells them."
toto replies: 'Can't you find them at your local mom and pop store ? - assuming you are living in the US -...or places where they sell cigarettes, candies, magazines. That is where I always buy them.'
heart of Rose asks: "I am looking for a cheap but good international phone calling card that I can buy online. And have it emailed to a friend in India so he can call me in the usa. ASAP. Can someone give me an answer?"
Just wanna live replies: 'i personally wouldnt trust them, but idk. try ebay.'
Michael M replies: 'better still go to a seven - eleven and you can get one instantly with real good raates'
sunnysea replies: 'Check'
